Examining Codes of Ethics

Ideals from the NAEYC Code of Ethics

—To appreciate the vulnerability of children and
their dependence on adults

—To be familiar with the knowledge base of early
childhood care and education and to stay informed
through continuing education and training

—To support the right of each child to play and
learn in an inclusive environment that meets the
needs of children with and without disabilities

These ideals are significant to me because I will be an EC educator in an Elementary School. As a teacher it is my ethical duty to be aware of my students' dependence upon me to. I am obligated to stay informed about current events in the early childhood arena in order to be an effective teacher to my students ans well as a channel for information to parents.

  1. I think the 3rd ideal you mentioned is very important. An inclusive learning environment for all children is so important. All children should be valued and actively involved in their learning.

  2. I liked the first quote. Kids are so little, so vulnerable, and dependent on adults. We need to be reminded as a society that kids need to be taken care of in a high quality environment!

    Best,

  3. Dana,

I too chose the ideal to be familiar with informed and up to date information pertaining to child development and care.
I think that staying informed is important just like you said, and helps us as professionals to be the most effective in our practice.

  4. I agree with you that it is important to stay informed. I had forgotten about how important it is until I began this journey for my Master's Degree. By being informed we can make the best decisions possible for children.
Inclusion is also crucial. All children, all people are of infinite value. Each has their own contributions to make.

  5. I think all of us are taking a step in the right direction as far as beginning our Master's programs to become more informed and up to date on current issues in education, which is very important step to becoming a quality educator. I like how you have inclusion as well because teachers need to find a way to include all children in their classrooms.

  6. Dana, you brought out something i tend to forget.....I forget how much these children whom we serve are so dependent, actually, totally dependent on the teacher. I remember how i wanted so much to be like my 1st grade teacher when i grew up. To me she knew everything, she was the smartest person. The secret - professional development, preparation and self reflection!!!i just found out in this course:)
    Thanks for sharing!

  8. Hi Dana. I agree with you in thinkning that continuing education is important. Things change so fast, and we have to know how to tackle tough issues that may arise.

And continuing education is also important when it comes to inclusion. So many people are afraid to work with special needs children. I believe that if they at least went to classes to learn more about disabilities they may be more open to accepting children with different needs.
